Since the beginning of 2010, economists and industry analysts have simultaneously encouraged and warned the printing industry: business will turn around, but it will do so slowly and take years (if ever) to return to its pre-recession success. This year’s Top 100 Trade Printers list is concrete evidence these predictions were sound. At first glance, the overall numbers are encouraging, but not overwhelmingly so. However, digging into the list, we discovered the turnaround isn’t as black-and-white as it appears.

The Top 100
This year’s Top 100 ranking companies sold a total of $3.1 billion in products and services, compared with last year’s $3.05 billion for FY08. This 1.8% increase represents the “slow but sure” uptick predicted by economists. The average company size also increased a slight 1.8% to $31.04 million. The total number of employees decreased 2%, while the average sales per employee increased 3.6%, demonstrating that “doing more with less” is here to stay. Although total sales and average sales per employee for the Top 100 increased, 77 companies reported negative growth, 22 reported positive growth and one reported flat growth. To discover the reason behind this, Print Solutions editors examined the top 10 companies separately from the overall 100.
