Sprinting to the Lead
Independent manufacturers line up at the blocks, waiting for the starting gun. Bang! Who's going to win?
Smart money is on the companies in our seventh annual Top 100 Manufacturers list. The firms vary in style--some sprint toward new growth markets, others keep a steady pace--but each company keeps its eyes on the prize: more profit.
Spend some time with the statistics on the following pages, and what emerges is an interesting snapshot of the market as it is today.
1.
Growth is slow.
On average, Top 100 manufacturers in the printing and document management industry increased 2003 sales by 1.5 percent compared with their 2002 sales--the same growth rate of two years ago. Average sales growth last year was 2.8 percent. In 2003, only five firms in the Top 100 achieved 20 percent growth or better, the lowest number of companies since we began keeping track in 1998.
