MeadWestvaco Corp., Stamford, Conn., introduced a portfolio highlighting the packaging and graphics benefits of its Crescendo® coated one-side paperboard. The portfolio, which includes an envelope and folder, contains complete manufacturing target information, including basis weights, thickness, calipers, internal bond scores, and moisture and stiffness levels for Crescendo in five languages. The tabs address the calibration of roughness testers, which was previously problematic due to the nonexistence of an absolute definition of paper surface roughness, the company said. Users can achieve calibration through sets of transfer standards that are assigned an average roughness value using a reference Parker PrintSurf. Schober USA, Cincinnati, will showcase next month its new RFID tag placement technology at Print ’05 in Chicago. The machine places RFID transponders under preprinted labels. It works with transponders in accordance with ISO specifications, in widths from 10 mm to 160 mm, the company said. Preprinted labels with widths from 20 mm to 200 mm can be applied at rates from 5,000 to 20,000 labels per hour. RISO Inc., Danvers, Mass., launched its MZ790 Printer-Duplicator. The MZ790, which prints at speeds up to 150 ppm, eliminates the need to remove the second ink cylinder for printing 1-color jobs, making it simple to switch between 1- and 2-color printing, the company said.
