Disappearing Act
Xerox scientists are experimenting with a new printing technology for self-erasing paper, a patent-pending project in collaboration with the Palo Alto Research Center Inc., which is owned by Xerox. The paper is printed with proprietary ink compounds, which change color when they absorb a certain wavelength of light (from a desktop printer) but gradually disappear in 16 to 24 hours. The image can also be immediately erased by exposing the document to heat.

Ideally, the paper can be used again and again for inter-office documents that are usually discarded after a single reading, such as email memos, Web pages and reference materials. Xerox estimates that two out of every five office documents are only kept for a daily period.
