PEOPLE
In Memoriam
Nora A. Shellhase, DMIA’s 1995-96 president, died June 22 after a long battle with cancer. Shellhase
founded distributorship Emerald Business Forms Inc., Edison, N.J., in 1977,
which was acquired by Source4 in 1998. Industry friends remember her dedication
to the industry and DMIA, and her resiliency.
Cliff Shellhase, Nora’s husband since 1981, remembers that “Nora was one of the first women as a forms industry entrepreneur to acquire one
of the finest and most respected reputations in the industry,” he says. “She was loved and respected by her customers and peers alike.” The two met at a DMIA (then NBFA) distributor meeting in Virginia, when he was
president of Delaware Valley Business Forms Inc.
John M. Loftis, president and CEO of Innovative Business Products Inc., who took
over DMIA’s presidency in 1996 from Shellhase, remembers her as a “real classy lady. She absolutely loved DMIA,” said Loftis, who knew Shellhase for about 15 years. “She credited the organization with her success and her best friends were from
DMIA. It shows the need to be active in the association and she really did
that.” A unique thing about Shellhase was her ability to find humor in the most
serious situation, he said.
Peter Colaianni, CAE, DMIA’s executive vice president, said, “Nora loved NBFA and DMIA. She gave her heart, soul, wonderful humor and
fantastic guidance to the association during all of her years as a member. Nora
will be missed by many members, the association and by me.”
Shellhase’s theme as president was “Changing Faces-Facing Changes,” and the association was renamed DMIA during her tenure. After Shellhase became
a board member of NBFA, she endured a series of tragedies – the deaths of five family members, including her son, Richard, brothers Ray and
Edward, her mother and son-in-law Dave.
Dan Siadak, chairman and CEO of Source4, said, “Nora was an incredible person of elegance, courage, and generosity. She had a
very selfless attitude towards life, both personally and professionally. There’s a saying that I’ve often referred to in my own life, and I think Nora is the very definition of
this saying:
‘I am only one, but I am one. I can’t do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do, and what
I ought to do, by the grace of God, I shall do.’ That, to me, really sums up Nora. From her personal life to her professional
life of starting a woman-owned business, back when there were very few
woman-owned businesses, to being president of DMIA, she did it all.”
“Nora was always, whether in her business or with Source4, making her customers
best interests her top priority,” he said. “That was just the way she worked. Because of that she built phenomenal
relationships. She always put the association’s best interests or other members’ best interests first. She typified ‘people helping people,’ which is what the association was all about.”
Anthony Quaranta, president of the CF Group, says, “Nora leaves this Earth a better place. She brought happiness to many people she
touched. I had the opportunity to serve under her as a member of the board
during her presidency. She represented herself, her associates and our
organization with complete class.”
Nora is survived by Cliff, her daughter, Denise Stremlo, grandson Gregory Novis
and an extended family of four daughters and eight grandchildren. A memorial
service was held July 7 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Gladstone, N.J.
