DSFI (Distributors Stock Forms Inc.), Addison, Ill., is increasing its product line to offer engineering rolls, desktop inkjet papers, wide format inkjet, and stock and custom point-of-sale rolls nationwide. The company will also offer promotional products for the first time, including branded office products. DSFI is also adding eight to 10 new jobs at its plants in California, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Texas, and they will be in manufacturing, shipping and sales.

Vibrant Graphics, Milwaukee, installed an HP Indigo ws4500 to offer its customers in-mold labeling that can be printed on the same media as traditional in-mold packaging. The company changed its name from Express Labels to Vibrant Graphics to better communicate its new service offering and focus on personalized printing.

BFS Business Printing, Boston, installed an HP Indigo 5500 to increase productivity and reduce turnaround times. The company has seen a growth in the demand for high quality color printing, and the new machine offers resolution up to 1200 dpi, which will replicate the look and feel of offset, the general manager said.

The Paper Mill Store, Sun Prairie, Wis., offers carbon neutral shipping. The company has offset all of its carbon emissions by purchasing carbon offset credits from Carbonfund.org. The company estimates it will reduce carbon output by as much as 115 tons per year. The carbon neutral shipment includes every shipment from the Wisconsin facilities and is offered at no additional charge. The company has been using wind power for its electricity needs by purchasing renewable energy credits since 2006.

Although drupa 2008 is yet months away, print suppliers are gearing up for the big show with new equipment releases and applications. Fueling speculation that 2008 will be the “inkjet drupa,” Kodak, Rochester, N.Y., announced that it will display the Stream Concept Press publicly for the first time at the show. The inkjet press utilizes mild heat fluctuations of the surface of the ink to form droplets at high speed, and it can produce 2,500 letter-sized pages per minute, the company says. Kodak will show expansions to the Versamark V-series inkjet system as well as inkjet/offset hybrids. The company will also exhibit digital printing solutions, including a new series of S-Class NexPresses, and a wide range of front-end software and applications.

Pitney Bowes, Stamford, Conn., launched a website to serve as a resource about the Intelligent Mail Barcode and related implementation standards. The site, www.pbpostalinfo.com, contains a basic overview of the subject, with links to a new white paper and background information. The Intelligent Mail Barcode is a tool that the U.S. Postal Service is implementing this year to track mail and enhance service to mailers by uniquely identifying every piece of mail.

Xerox, Stamford, Conn., introduced the Picture Me Profitable Kit for digital print providers to design market and produce a range of photo specialty products. The kit includes an overview of the photo specialty market, industry research reports, marketing tools, templates for creating “hot” applications and a sample book. Customers can create greeting cards, calendars, photo books, invitations, menus and business cards. The kit, part of the ProfitAccelerator series, is available from Xerox sales representatives and from Fujifilm Imaging Systems and FujiFilm Graphics Systems.

Pad Print Machinery, East Dorset, Vt., introduced the XE-30, its most powerful pad printing machine yet. The new piece offers more than 4,000 Newton meters of pad compression and prints well on extremely rough surfaces in one to eight colors in images up to 9.75 inches in diameter. The XE-30 can be ordered with options that print multicolor logos, 4-color process, and printing on specialty items such as curved metal parts.

The MagicTouch USA, Niles, Ill., introduced MagiCut, a series of materials for applying colored text, logos and freeform designs to dark garments and promotional items. The fabrics can be ordered in small quantities with a minimum of one yard. The fabrics are: flex, a high-quality cast polyurethane film with a matte reflection and a thermally activated adhesive; flock, which has high-density fibers for a textured feel; and foils, which are available in holographic, metallic, pearl glitter, and reflective cut. The company also sells a software to convert images to outlines suitable for cutting.

HP, along with Domtar, International Paper, Kodak, April, Epson, Mondi, M-Real and Suzano have agreed to support the performance standards of ColorLok papers. HP, Kodak and Epson will recommend the paper with certain printer models. ColorLok papers have faster dry times, include sharper images and improved readability, HP said. Papers certified as ColorLok must pass a high set of standards, which will be ensured by the RIT Printing Applications Laboratory. As of January 2008, the following papers have passed the standards: HP Everyday Papers, Hammermill Papers, Duo, Pol and Rey.
