LINGO
FIXED WIRELESS--
Wireless devices or systems that are situated in fixed locations, such as homes or offices, as opposed to devices that are mobile, such as cell phones and personal digital assistants. Point-to-point signal transmissions of fixed wireless devices occur through the air rather than through copper or fiber cables; therefore, the devices don't require satellite feeds or local phone service.
TPI
(short for "tracks per inch")--The density of tracks on a disk. For example, double-density 5.25-inch floppy disks have a TPI of 48, while high-density floppies have a TPI of 96. High-density 3.5-inch disks are formatted with 135 TPI. Hard disks have TPIs in the thousands.
SOFTWARE ENTROPY
--
The tendency for software to become difficult and costly to maintain over time. A software system that undergoes continuous change, such as new functionality added to its design, becomes more complex and disorganized as it loses its original design structure. It's often better to redesign software in order to support changes, rather than build on existing programs. (Redesigning software, however, can introduce new bugs.)

MANAGEMENT DATA SYSTEMS
(FMDS), a distributor management software supplier in Reno, Nev., introduced
two enhancements to its Quantum Net e-commerce program. The Quantum Net site
now can be customized to feature a client's brand identity rather than a distributor's.
Distributors who use Quantum Net pay a one-time fee with no additional fee
for hosting. Quantum Net also is simplifying orders by allowing users to send
camera-ready artwork and purchase orders to vendors in one email. Clients
can select their print items, enter variable information, and view and approve
PDF proofs online. Once an order is submitted, it's electronically transmitted
into the distributor's Quantum 2000 system, where purchase orders are created
and emailed directly to the vendor with a link to the PDF artwork. To schedule
a demonstration of the program's email enhancements, call Susan Godfrey at
(800) 328-7804, or visit www.quantum2k.com.
