Print Solutions September 2005

Cover Story

2005 Print Excellence And Knowledge Awards
The Print Excellence And Knowledge (PEAK) Awards program recognizes excellence in the design and production of printed products that add value by solving client problems or improving a client’s business. PEAK Award winners are actual “print solutions.” While overall printing craftsmanship is an important part of the judging process, PEAK Awards focus more on the value-added features and benefits received by end users.

This year’s competition drew more than 200 entries from North America and Europe. Winners in the 29 categories reflect virtually the entire spectrum of printing, from labels, direct mail and packaging to variable data digital printing and web-based print systems. There are several categories of traditional commercial printing, plus “Self Promotion”— projects printing companies create to promote themselves—as well as special categories such as “Time Saver” and “Money Maker.”

Listed directly under the boldface category headings are Grand Award winners, who will receive a special plaque and also will be featured at the Print Solutions Conference & Expo, Oct. 18-20 in Orlando, Fla. Each Grand Award winner appears with a judges’ comment. Award of Excellence winners, who receive certificates, are listed below the Grand Award winners. In some categories, the judges identified Award of Excellence winners deserving “special recognition.” These are listed separately under Grand Award winners.

Integrated Parking Control Pass

Judges’ comments: “Clever. Lots of advantages.” USA\docufinish developed this integrated parking control pass to hang from a vehicle’s rear view mirror. IPS Direct Marketing Agency designed an 11 x 7-inch form that can be folded in half to create a 5 1/2 x 7-inch mailer. The form is duplex laser-imaged with a unique ID number on the pass and customer address information on the mailer. The product allows lot operators to shorten the validation period to minimize unauthorized transfer or use beyond the allowed time.

Bar Coded Labels with Die Cut

Judges’ comments: “A good idea that works well.” A large warehouse operation uses bar coded labels to identify pallets of products. Futek Forms, Tags & Labels Inc. used a die cut in the liner to allow four small labels to be removed after the overall large label was affixed to a pallet. It designed the label die so that each small label is exposed and can be easily removed from the liner by using just a fingernail.
