Solutions September 2005
A
Second Honeymoon
Mike
Johnson won a trip to Hawaii awarded
by Winner’s Circle Sponsors
at the 2004 Print Solutions Conference
& Expo, but he chose not to
go. Instead, the owner of distributorship
Mike Johnson Sales, Wichita, Kan.,
gave the trip to Daniel Smith,
his top sales representative.
Smith, who has worked with Johnson
for 11 years, was surprised and
instantly appreciative. He and
wife Heather hadn’t spent
a vacation alone together since
the births of their three daughters.
The
couple left a cold, cloudy and
rainy Wichita for Honolulu in
February. “When we got there,
it was about midnight, and weather
was just perfect,” Smith
says. “We checked into our
hotel and then went straight down
to the beach and just walked for
a little bit.” They spent
three days in Honolulu, lying
on the beach and swimming in the
ocean. “It feels like paradise,”
Smith says. “We felt like
we were almost kids again—just
us, not knowing anybody. We had
a real nice vacation.”
On
the fourth day, they flew to the
“big island,” where
they saw firsthand evidence of
Hawaii’s volcanic nature.
“It’s about a 2-mile
hike across hard lava—it’s
sharp and hot—to get to
where the lava actually flows
into the ocean,” Smith says.
“There are two different
flows…and probably 85 to
95 percent of the people just
hiked to the first flow. We decided
that we’d go to the second
one, and you could go right up
to it. People were taking pictures,
and that was probably the highlight
of the trip, just how powerful
and hot the lava was.”
