Mike Jackson, president and CEO of Verso Paper Corp., accepts the American Forest and Paper Association's 2008 Environmental and Energy Achievement Award from Donna Harman, the association's president.

Verso Receives Top Environmental Award
Verso Paper Corp, Memphis, Tenn., was awarded the 2008 Environmental and Energy Achievement Award from the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) for its work with the Bucksport Environmental Innovation Partnership (BEIP). The BEIP is a collaboration of Verso's Bucksport Mill in Maine, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the town of Bucksport, the University of Maine, environmental groups and citizens. The group was created to help the mill further reduce its environmental footprint.

The BEIP began with an agreement the mill reached with the DEP and EPA to identify and implement a series of plant-wide emissions reduction projects. The projects served in lieu of previously mandated air emissions control equipment for a gas turbine that was installed at the mill in 2001. The BEIP then evaluated nearly two dozen projects, approving eight at a cost to the Bucksport Mill of more than $4.3 million. These included technical improvements to all four of the mill's paper machines and the conversion to natural gas in one of the mill's boilers. The improvements reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by 30 percent, sulfur dioxide emissions by 54 percent, water use by 8 percent and sewer losses by 19 percent. The projected annual saving from these projects are $1.3 million, the company says.
